OSHA Offers Safety Training Grants During National Safety Month
Every year, thousands of people are injured or even killed due to accidents on the road, in the workplace or in their homes and communities. Each June, the National Safety Council (NSC) sponsors National Safety Month. The month is split into four separate weeks with each week showcasing a different topic. These topics include Stand Ready to Respond, Be Healthy, Watch Out for Dangers, and Share Roads Safely. Thousands of organizations partner with the NSC to help raise awareness of safety issues that can impact people in a variety of ways.
In an effort to eliminate accidents in the workplace and help promote safety, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), which is a part of the U.S. Department of Labor, has announced the availability of Susan Harwood safety training grants. Ms. Harwood was the former director for OSHA’s Office of Risk Assessment. During her time with OSHA she helped to lead the way for protection standards for issues involving bloodborne pathogens, benzene, cotton dust, asbestos, formaldehyde, and lead. The grants were created in her memory.
There are $4.6 million dollars available in grants which are targeted to fund hands-on, in-person training and educational programs, and the creation of materials for employees who work for small businesses. These grants are also aimed at industries in which there is a high rate of illness, injury, and death, along with those for workers who are underserved, non-English speaking, and temporary workers.
OSHA encourages community and faith based nonprofits, labor unions, employer associations, labor/management associations, colleges and universities, and Indian tribes to apply. These grants, which target training and education, are one way in which National Safety Month can gain traction in the effort to lower illness, injury, and death, whether it be at home, on the job, or in our local communities.
